“We artists are fortunate to have a channel. We do it out of necessity, to survive; otherwise, we would go mad.”
The Madrid-based artist, currently exhibiting her latest collection at Baal Gallery, shares insights into her creative process.
“I approach my work by looking inward rather than outward. My painting emerges intuitively and emotionally. The beginning feels like a leap into the unknown. I believe in that thrill, in the uncertainty of where the journey will lead. I don’t follow a preconceived plan; instead, making decisions in real time defines my work—there’s no strategy. That leap into the void is the essence of my work, and I want the viewer to feel that thrill as well. In doing so, they connect with my intimacy, with the deepest part of my emotions. Only at the end do I analyze and try to understand the piece, and in doing so, understand myself.”
A color expert for over 20 years, Virginia delights in giving color a central role. She experiments, tests, and continues to learn. Her style may evolve, yet it always remains uniquely hers. “Life transforms you, and so does the work,” she reflects.
Ultimately, Virginia allows herself the spontaneous expression of intimate moments, revealing to the world her emotional diary—or, as she calls them, her self-portraits.
