MARIKO KUMON

Mariko Kumon’s artistic practice is rooted in an intuitive and deeply emotional approach, with sculpture at its core. Through the use of wire, the line becomes an extension of thought—bending, twisting, and unfolding as it seeks its place in space. This dynamic line generates a sensitive, inner narrative that conveys emotional states and memories, forming a delicate and personal visual language.

Born in Japan and based in Barcelona, Kumon moves fluidly between cultures and disciplines. With a background in applied mathematics and a complete shift to the arts over twenty years ago, her work embodies a unique balance between the rational and the emotional. Her multidisciplinary practice includes sculpture, installation, painting, and conceptual art, always marked by an experimental approach grounded in traditional Japanese aesthetics.

Kumon’s minimalist work is deeply attuned to nature, often exploring themes of identity, time, and the beauty of the ephemeral. She has exhibited nearly one hundred times internationally, in cities such as New York, London, Paris, Venice, and Madrid. At BAAL Gallery, we are pleased to present a selection of works that reflect her subtle, introspective universe—where each form is a search, and each void, a possibility.
